MANOR EAST MALL: BRYAN, TX

Jonah Norason's Commentary

Posted May 3, 2011 (user submitted April 2, 2007)

Manor East Mall was built in 1972 as Bryan's premier enclosed shopping centers. Montgomery Wards, a theater and Kroger were early anchors, but by the time I got to know it, it was a dilapidated mess of outward facing stores...a Jo-Anns, a Bealls, a Hastings, Payless Shoes, Family Dollar, an Eckerd's (which moved in 1998), a Wal-Mart (long since replaced by a Super Wal-Mart near the interstate), a Hastings, a "Lease Town", a "50 Off" store, a sign of Manor East Mall displaying names of long-gone stores, and Animal World (the only remaining store inside).

In 2002 or so, most of the mall was demolished or redone. Bealls, JoAnns, Hastings, Payless Shoes, and Lease Town (now "Rent City") survived, and many new stores moved in, such as a large HEB store. Now it's Tejas Center, a shopping center.
